Table Of Contents
Once known as "Sweden's Manchester" for its booming textile industry, the city has since transformed those same red-brick factories into a green, modern hub of culture, research, and university life. It's a compact, walkable city that you can comfortably explore in a day, and with Stockholm just an hour and a half away by train, it makes for a perfect day trip or a weekend stop.
Where to go
🔗1. Industrilandskapet & the waterfalls
🔗 Walking along the Motala ström river through the Industrilandskapet is what Norrköping is all about. The path takes you past waterfalls and rapids on one side and old red-brick factory buildings on the other, and the contrast is really striking. The industrial architecture next to the natural beauty of the water creates something you don't see often. You'll see ducks swimming in the river, and there are plenty of spots to stop and take photos. Every bridge and bend offers a different angle of the waterfalls with the factories in the background. But what stays with you the most is the constant sound of the water, surprisingly relaxing. There are benches along the riverside where you can just sit, close your eyes, and listen. It's one of those places where you don't need to do much to enjoy it.
